Port Moresby Nature Park has unveiled an exciting new exhibit, the Pesquet’s Parrot walk-through aviary, which Paga Hill Development Company (PHDC) is proudly sponsoring.

The Nature Park’s newest attraction highlights the importance of protecting parrots in the wild, while maintaining the cultural significance of traditional PNG costumes (Bilas). The brilliant red feathers of the Pesquet’s parrots are a key component of headdress in ceremonial Highlands attire. Lined with tropical flora, the walk features information boards which will raise awareness and educate locals and visitors alike on the importance of reducing hunting of these species through preservation of their Bilas.

The aviary was officially opened by Minister for Sports, National Events & APEC 2018, the Hon. Justin Tkatchenko MP, Mr Stanley Liria, Director of Paga Hill Development Company and sponsor of the exhibit, and Ms Michelle McGeorge, the Nature Park’s General Manager.

Gudmundur Fridriksson, CEO of PHDC, spoke at the opening event acknowledging Hon. Justin Tkatchenko MP and his efforts in the promotion of PNG’s flora and fauna.

“PNG’s gift to the world is its people, culture and languages, its incredible history, and its rich, diverse flora and fauna. Paga Hill Estate is about establishing Port Moresby as a viable tourist destination, with world class tourism infrastructure. That way, so many more people can visit this country and appreciate these truly special and unique exhibits at the Port Moresby Nature Park.

The Port Moresby Nature Park is the country’s leading botanical and native zoological park and is the perfect introduction to PNG’s unique flora and fauna. We are very proud to be able to support the Nature Park by sponsoring the Pesquet’s Parrot exhibit,” said Gudmundur Fridriksson.

The Pesquet’s Parrot walk-through aviary is now open to public. The Port Moresby Nature Park is open seven days a week.
